The Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to continue to improve on safety on the State waterways.
Managing Director of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Abisola Kamson stated this while confirming the boat collision incident reported at Ibeshe, in Ikorodu axis of the state on Thursday [January 21].

Kamson said the incident which occurred in the morning was as a result of fog which led to poor visibility for the captains of the two boats.

She said the Authority was able to ascertain what led to the incident from its information gathering machinery and onsite water guards.

According to her, one of the boats, MV Cherio, which had twenty passengers on board was operating at high speed and by the time it noticed the second boat, Olaoluwa, which had no passengers on board, it was too late to avoid a collision.

Noting that the impact of the collision claimed the life of a passenger on board and left three other persons injured, Managing Director stated that the three injured persons were immediately rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital and had been transferred to LUTH for further treatment.

The LASWA boss said the enforcement of life-jackets on waterways reduced the number of casualties as all passengers on board were wearing life jackets.

She said immediately the incident was reported, LASWA deployed its water guards to monitor and oversight the situation adding that the Marine Police had been notified and were currently carrying out an investigation.

She also restated the commitment of the State Government to enforce speed limits on the waterways by operators as well as aggressive campaign and enforcement of guidelines for commercial boat operators to stem boat accidents in the future.

Director- General of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Emeka Mba

The Director- General of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Emeka Mba, has said appropriate regulatory structure was crucial for switching broadcast services from analogue to digital system.

In a statement in Lagos, Mba said that digital, by its nature, would disrupt the way television was being done, and the way people interact with television.

Noting that the present rules and regulations will need to also undergo some changes, to make them more suitable in the new era, he commended the Federal Government for providing an enabling environment for the commission to thrive, and its support for the success of the Digital Switch Over (DSO).

It should be noted that Nigeria and most of the African countries failed to meet the International Telecommunication Union, ITU, DSO deadline of June, 2015.

The Commission said the Union deadline was not met due to lack of fund and myriads of challenges, which included aggregate content development, distribution and production and availability of Set Top Boxes.
